'FROM FARMWORKER'S SON TO MAYOR' £6.95 free uk postage sorry we cannot ship abroad at the momment
The life and times of a Devonshire man,
including truths, myths and trivia picked up on the way

A book by Dennis Bater, published jointly by Dennis and this web site

Dennis Bater has lived in Hatherleigh for most of his life, A Devon man who rose from humble beginnings, he has twice been Mayor of West Devon. This is the story of his life, but with lots added.

Dennis was born into a farming family in Iddesleigh, and he has been Mayor of Hatherleigh 7 times and Mayor of West Devon twice. He spent more than 10 years writing the story of his life and careers, as well as gathering a multitude of 'trivia, myths and truths' about Hatherleigh and its history to include.

The book deals with his upbringing in Iddesleigh and eventually move to Hatherleigh, where he was Fish and Chip man, Postman, Fireman, Builder, Market Worker, Wedding Cameraman and Councillor. For one period, he held down all seven jobs at once! A complete chapter is devoted to his period as a Fireman, with colourful descriptions of major incidents he attended, with photos.

Was the Boy Scout movement started in Hatherleigh? Dennis thinks it may have been and includes intriguing evidence to support his theory. Other chapters deal with historical Hatherleigh including many of the old characters who lived in the town, murders, and leisure in Hatherleigh today.

The book has 76 pages and is published in full colour on high quality paper and perfect bound. The 'myths and trivia' pages are colour-coded and stand out as an entertaining complement to the main chapters. In all there are 126 photos, about half in colour, the rest much older black/white prints.

The book has been edited by Geoff Hodgkinson, one of the co-owners of the Hatherleigh web site, who said: "Dennis's story is fascinating and his words are full of colour and the sound of Devon, although his spelling left a lot to be desired! I enjoyed helping produce this book, which I believe may well become a valuable historical resource, but I will forever remember Bater-isms such as 'that famous horse racing town in Yorkshire called Cataract', which constantly tried to catch me out."

The price is £6.95 and the book is available from these shops. Purchasers can also call Dennis direct on 01837 810789, or visit the web site at www.hatherleigh.net, or email baterbook@hatherleigh.net, to receive a copy by mail. Postage and packing is FREE.
