Pot Holes in Exbourne
By Neil Price, Co-Editor

April 12, 2017: Mr Steve Gazzard writes "Like most places in Devon and else where we are dogged by 'potholes' in ever increasing numbers. Sadly Exbourne has become another place to be affected by this problem. I know the matter has been reported to the Parish Council in hope that they from their official position might get the potholes repaired. Sadly this has not worked. As a result on the 2nd February 2017 I telephoned the Highways Dept on 034515551015 and reported the location of the potholes. I was given a Reference Number W17976664 and told the matter would be dealt and even thanked for reporting it. Sadly, but not to my surprise nothing was done. As a result I again contacted the Highways Dept on 29th March 2017 and politely told them of my displeasure that the promised repairs had not been carried out. I was informed that according to their records the potholes had been filled in. I told them that they had not been repaired and was informed that this would be looked into again and dealt with. On this occasion I was given another reference number W17993041. So it remains to be seen if it will be done but in the meantime the Highways authority have placed themselves in a vulnerable position in as much as two reports have now been registered and sufficient time has passed to allow the work to be done. Should it now transpire that as a result of these potholes damage is caused to a vehicle, or some one falls whilst crossing the road having caught their foot in the pot hole, or a motor or pedal cyclist is thrown off their bike, then the High Ways Dept can be sued for damages. Should that situation arise then the Reference Numbers I have given above should be referred to, plus I would be prepared to make a statement to corroborate what I have done and said above. This might be a big stick to crack a walnut but some times its needed."
